Project Introduction
SmartBulb is an advanced smart lighting solution designed to improve sleep quality by reducing the impact of blue and green light exposure in the evening. Research shows that artificial lighting, especially from standard LED and incandescent bulbs, can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm and negatively affect sleep.
To address this, SmartBulb uses a specialized light spectrum that minimizes blue and green light while maintaining a warm, comfortable illumination for evening use. It allows users to replace standard bulbs and create a healthier nighttime environment without complete darkness.
To support this functionality, SmartBulb is powered by a cloud-based infrastructure that enables remote control via a mobile application. The system ensures seamless device-to-app and cloud communication, along with a secure, scalable backend and an intuitive user interface.
Scope of Project
Our team handled the full development and integration of the SmartBulb solution, ensuring seamless connectivity between the devices and mobile applications. The project focused on the following key areas:
1. Embedded Development
Carelia successfully delivered embedded firmware development for a solution built on the ESP32 architecture. The team developed a secure, reliable, and feature-rich system with the following key capabilities:
Cloud Connectivity: Enabled seamless Wi-Fi communication with the cloud, supporting low-latency, bidirectional data exchange.
Security & Reliability: Implemented firmware designed for secure, stable, and reliable device operation.
Device Communication: Integrated Wi-Fi for cloud connectivity and Matter protocol over Wi-Fi and Thread for fast, secure local communication.
Firmware Management: Enabled Over-The-Air (OTA) updates and efficient firmware lifecycle management.
A core aspect of the firmware development was the implementation of the modern Matter protocol. Matter is a unified smart home standard designed to simplify device communication and ensure interoperability across ecosystems. Supported by major technology providers such as Apple, Google, and Amazon, Matter enables secure, scalable, and seamless connectivity using IP-based networking over Wi-Fi and Thread.
For this project, the Carelia team implemented a Matter-based communication architecture:


2. Mobile application development
Carelia developed robust mobile applications for iOS and Android, ensuring seamless device control and an intuitive user experience.
- Control devices locally via Matter and remotely through cloud connectivity
- Turn lights on/off, adjust brightness, and select sleep-optimized lighting modes
- Real-time synchronization between the mobile app and smart bulb
- Customizable scheduling to automate lighting based on sleep routines
3. Cloud-Based Infrastructure Development
- Built a serverless architecture using AWS Lambda and API Gateway to ensure scalability and reduce maintenance overhead
- Integrated AWS IoT Core for seamless and secure device-to-cloud communication
- Designed a low-latency messaging system using MQTT and WebSockets to enable real-time lighting control and feedback
4. Security and User Authentication
- Implemented secure authentication using OAuth 2.0 and Firebase Authentication to protect user accounts
Ensured end-to-end encryption for secure data transmission between devices and the cloud
Integrated role-based access control (RBAC) to support multi-user access (e.g., shared control within households)
5. Performance Optimization & Scalability
- Designed a scalable architecture to support future product expansion, including integration with voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant)
- Optimized backend performance to handle thousands of concurrent connections without degradation
- Implemented caching mechanisms (Redis or AWS ElastiCache) to improve API response speed
