Project Introduction
The Carelia engineering team developed an advanced Agriculture Asset Tracking System — a cross-platform mobile application designed to improve safety and operational awareness in agricultural environments. The solution enables real-time monitoring of workers and equipment operating near agricultural harvesters and other heavy machinery.
By combining IoT technologies, wearable devices, and real-time data communication, the platform helps farmers and agricultural teams maintain greater visibility across large farming areas while reducing safety risks associated with heavy equipment operations.
The system allows administrators to define hazard zones, monitor the proximity between workers and operating machines, and receive immediate alerts when safety thresholds are exceeded.
Key Features
Real-Time Location Tracking
Workers wear connected devices that transmit their location to the system. Farm managers and team members can monitor movement and positioning within designated agricultural areas.
Geo-Fencing and Hazard Zones
Virtual boundaries can be created around restricted or potentially dangerous zones. The system automatically triggers alerts if a worker enters an unsafe area near operating machinery.
Emergency Panic Button
Users can instantly send an SOS alert that includes their precise location, allowing nearby team members or supervisors to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Two-Way Communication
The application enables secure group communication, allowing users to make and receive calls directly within the system to coordinate tasks and respond to incidents.
Team and Family Groups
Multiple users can be linked into monitoring groups, providing centralized visibility and simplified communication across teams working in the field.
Subscription-Based Platform
The system supports a flexible subscription model with multiple service tiers and feature sets, allowing farms and agricultural organizations to choose the functionality that best fits their operational needs.
Project Goal
The primary objective of the Agriculture Asset Tracking System was to create a technology platform that improves safety standards and reduces operational risks in agriculture. By leveraging connected devices, location tracking, and automated alerts, the system helps protect workers while enabling more efficient management of agricultural operations.
Scope of Project
The Carelia engineering team was responsible for developing both the backend infrastructure and the Android mobile application for the Agriculture Asset Tracking System. Each component was designed to support the overall goal of improving safety, monitoring, and operational awareness in agricultural environments where heavy machinery is in operation.
Backend Application
The backend system serves as the central platform for data processing, communication, and system management. Built using Java technologies, it manages user interactions, safety rules, and real-time communication between devices.
Key backend responsibilities include:
User Group Management
The system allows administrators to create, manage, and organize user groups. This includes maintaining a secure database of users, managing group memberships, and implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms to ensure secure access to the platform.
Hazard Zone Management
The backend enables the creation and management of hazard zones within agricultural areas. Administrators can define zones based on location, size, and activation conditions. Custom zones can be configured according to the specific operational needs of each farm or agricultural site.
Safety Rule Configuration
Users can define rules associated with each hazard zone, including notification triggers, safety procedures, and automated actions when workers approach restricted areas or operating machinery. The system processes these rules in real time to ensure safety protocols are enforced effectively.
Real-Time Notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM)
The platform integrates with Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver real-time alerts directly to users’ mobile devices. Notifications are triggered when safety rules are violated, when users approach restricted zones, or when other critical events occur. This ensures workers and supervisors are immediately informed about potential risks.
Android Mobile Application
The Android application acts as the primary interface for workers and supervisors, enabling real-time monitoring and safety management in agricultural zones.
Key mobile application capabilities include:
Location Tracking
The application uses GPS and device sensors to determine the precise location of users within the agricultural area. Location data is continuously updated to track movement and ensure workers remain aware of nearby machinery and hazard zones.
GPS-Based Geofencing
The system uses geofencing technology to create virtual safety boundaries around hazardous areas. When a user enters or exits a predefined zone, the application automatically triggers alerts and safety notifications.
Proximity Monitoring
The application calculates the distance between workers and operating agricultural machines. When users approach unsafe proximity levels, the system provides real-time warnings to help prevent accidents and ensure safer working conditions.
Project’s Specifics

Results

1. Increased Safety
Real-time location tracking and automated alerts significantly improve safety across agricultural environments. The application helps prevent accidents by monitoring the position of individuals within the farm and notifying users when restricted areas are accessed.
The system provides additional protection for vulnerable individuals. For example, children can be monitored through real-time tracking to prevent them from entering hazardous zones near operating machinery. Geo-fencing alerts immediately notify farmers if someone enters restricted areas.
For older adults, the integrated panic button allows users to quickly request assistance. Family members or supervisors can remotely monitor their location and respond rapidly if help is needed. Farm workers also benefit from improved communication and coordination through the platform, especially in remote areas where visibility and connectivity may be limited.
2. Reduced Anxiety
The system helps reduce stress for farmers and their families by providing continuous visibility across the farm. Real-time monitoring and instant alerts allow farmers to focus on daily operations while knowing that safety mechanisms are actively protecting their teams and family members.
Remote monitoring capabilities also enable family members to stay connected and informed about activities on the farm. This additional layer of awareness contributes to greater peace of mind, improved well-being, and a safer working environment overall.
3. Improved Operational Efficiency
The platform improves coordination and communication across agricultural teams. Instant messaging and real-time alerts allow workers to quickly exchange information, reducing delays during critical operations.
Location-based data also supports better task allocation and resource management. Supervisors can deploy workers more efficiently, reduce downtime, and respond quickly to emergencies. These capabilities help maintain smoother workflows and uninterrupted farm operations.
4. Scalable and Flexible Architecture
The system is designed to support farms of different sizes and operational structures. Customizable features such as adjustable geo-fences and modular functionality allow organizations to adapt the platform according to their specific safety requirements and budgets.
The solution can also integrate with existing farm management software, enabling centralized monitoring and improved data collection. This flexible architecture ensures long-term scalability while maintaining compatibility with evolving agricultural technologies.
